Being closer to the point of impact the four who were out of cover are gone. Their bodies thrown somewhere or simply obliterated by the explosion. Of the others, two stumble back down the tracks towards Connolly, disorientated and burnt badly, the others motionless on the tracks behind them.

Riley and Rob are in a similar condition and lie limply on the tracks where the bridge ends, their clothes torn and blackened by the heat.

Tommy and Kenny run towards them, each one to a man to check that they were still alive. Kenny reaches Riley first, he’d made a few extra feet up in the sprint and landed further down the tracks. Kenny rolls him onto his back and listens to his chest, then checks his breathing before shouting up to Shearer: GO GET HELP! HURRY!!
