The rider kinda knows what direction he wants to go but his fears, his habits, his beliefs, which are represented by the elephant, somehow seem to take him in another direction.

The power struggle between such a powerful beast with a little man on his back is a perfect representation. But most people, from what I could see, rode blindfolded, on a drunk elephant with an old “cave man” set of habits and perceptions that had it on edge and in a panic for the vast majority of the time.
